New Poetry Workshop at Big Blue Marble Book Store

This notice is from our good friend Mike Cohen, host of the Poetry Aloud and Alive Series at Big Blue Marble Book Store in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia.

New! Poetry Writing Classes at Big Blue Marble Bookstore

Featuring Hal Sirowitz, Award Winning Poet, the Former Poet Laureate of Queens, New York and Minter Krotzer, Non-Fiction and Prose Poem Writer, Creative Writing Teacher

Special One Day Workshop – Sunday, December 13th from 3-5pm ($25 – includes reading materials fee)

Poetry Workshop Series – Sundays from 3-5pm starting January 10th

Six sessions, meeting on Sunday afternoons from 1-3pm, January 10th – February 28th (no class Martin Luther King and President’s Day
weekends) ($150 – includes reading materials fee)

In both the workshop and class series, Hal and Minter will lead a workshop focusing on poetry drawn from one’s life stories mostly in the forms of free verse and the prose poem. Selected poetry texts will be read and discussed. There will be in class writing and optional sharing. Series classes include private one-on-one meeting with teachers at the end of the series and a celebratory reading at the Big Blue Marble Café.

You must pre-register/register with Minter directly by November 30th (full payment) for the one day class and by January 4th ($50 deposit) for the series. Space will be limited. Please note that there has been enormous interest in these classes and we expect them to fill soon.

                                               === About Hal: Hal Sirowitz is the author of four books of poems, Mother Said, My Therapist Said (both Random House), Father Said, and Before, During & After (both Soft Skull Press). His work has been translated into nine languages including Icelandic and Turkish! Garrison Keillor has read his work many times on NPR’s Writer’s Almanac and he has included Hal’s poems in his anthologies, Good Poems and Good Poems for Hard Times. Hal has performed and appeared on MTV’s Spoken Word Unplugged, PBS’s Poetry Heaven, NPR’s All Things Considered, and Fresh Air with Terry Gross. Awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship. Hal is the former Poet Laureate of Queens, New York.

About Minter: Minter Krotzer’s prose has been published in Many Mountains Moving, the Saint Ann’s Review, the Arkansas Review, Upstreet, Night Train, Before and After: Stories from New York (WW Norton 2002), Louisiana in Words (Pelican Press), God Stories (Random House 2008), and in the upcoming Hint Fiction anthology (WW Norton).
She has received writing fellowships at the New School, where she received an MFA, Bennington College, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Squaw Valley Writers Conference.
